The Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas
A&M University is one of the largest, fully accredited programs
in the country and is ranked by U.S. News & World Report 12th
among public institutions. The department features a diverse
faculty that is committed to excellence in education and to
expanding the boundaries of knowledge and understanding of chemical
and biological systems through research. The department
values high-quality students, evidenced in part by an
average SAT score that is higher than the average university
score. In addition, 20 percent of the incoming freshman class
holds National Merit standing. The department also values diversity
in its undergraduate program - more than 30 percent of its
undergradute student population is female, and 16 percent is
classified as minority.
The department typically graduates about 130 students a year who
earn a bachelor of science degree and receive starting salaries
that average $72,500/year. Graduates work in the petrochemical,
pharmaceutical and microelectronic industries or transition to
graduate or professional schools to become lawyers, physicians and
researchers.
Before graduating, students have the opportunity to become
involved in a number of professional and recreational activities.
Students who participate in the co-op and intern programs get to
apply their knowledge to real industrial problems. What's more, the
