Harry West Memorial

Posted in Department on Thursday, November 9th, 2006

It is with a very heavy heart that we must inform you of the untimely demise of Dr. Harry West. Dr. West struggled with and fought, successfully, against adult diabetes since his teens.  But finally, the ravages of the disease led to a massive heart attack on the morning of Wednesday, October 4, 2006. While we mourn his loss, we need to remember all the good things he taught us: his very positive attitude, his zest for life, his ability and desire to help everyone, and his ready wit.  He was a very strong supporter and friend of the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety
Center, and helped mentor many in the Center as well as the Department.

In Honor of Dr. West’s memory, we are accepting donations for a Faculty Chair or Professorship in his name. Please make checks payable to the Texas A&M Foundation and on the memo line of the check indicate Harry West Memorial Fund.  For more information please contact Sara Lillehaugen of the Texas A&M Foundation at (979) 845-5113 or visit the Foundation’s website, http://giving.tamu.edu/ or within the department contact Valerie Green at val-green@tamu.edu.

Akgerman memorial funds update

Posted in Department on Thursday, November 9th, 2006

In 2004, we brought you the news that longtime Chemical Engineering professor Dr. Aydin Akgerman passed away on December 27, 2003.  Akgerman had been a faculty member of the department for 23 years, during which he served five years as a graduate advisor, another five years as Associate Head, and one year as interim department head.

Since then, we have been successful in rising over $30,000.  Although this is a great sum of money, it is far from the goal of having either a professorship in his name or several graduate student scholarships come from the Aydin Akgerman Memorial Fund will be used to support.

If you would like to contribute to this fund, checks can be mailed to the Texas A&M Foundation at 401 George Bush Drive, College Station, TX 77840-2811.  Please make checks payable to the Texas A&M Foundation and on the memo line of the check indicate Aydin Akgerman Memorial Fund.  For more information please contact Sara Lillehaugen (saral@tamu.edu) of the Texas A&M Foundation at (979) 845-5113 or visit the Foundation’s website, http://giving.tamu.edu/ or within the department contact Valerie Green at val-green@tamu.edu.
